The RFU arranges insurance cover on an annual basis 1 July – 30 June for affiliated clubs (voting and nonvoting) including OCRFC. Details of all the cover provided is on the England Rugby Insurance Centre website.
The cover arranged includes ‘Combined Liability’ protection for your club, including players, coaches, officials and committee or board members and trustees as well as catastrophic injury ‘Personal Accident’ cover for players, coaches and referees. Further details are below. Please note that the insurance does NOT cover loss of income resulting from temporary injuries, like broken bones. You can arrange individual cover if this of concern to you – because, for example, you are self- employed and could not work if you broke a bone or tore a ligament.
Liability Insurance
The combined liability insurance includes the following protections:
- Public/Products Liability – in case someone is injured or his or her property is damaged, on or off the pitch, and holds the club responsible.
- Professional Indemnity – protection against claims for financial loss.
- Employers Liability – cover for injuries to employees and volunteers that they suffer whilst working and/or volunteering for the club.
- Directors and Officers Liability – protection for the personal liability of committee members, directors or trustees of the club in respect of their management decisions.
Activities Covered
Liability insurance covers most club activities, including playing and training, commercial and fundraising activities. This includes hiring the club premises to other users, such as a CB, local sports club, community club or for private functions.
Cover is also included for Health Care Professionals who are providing pitch-side emergency first aid cover.

Personal Accident
The group Personal Accident policy provides cover for players, coaches, referees and officials if they suffer a catastrophic injury, such as a spinal or brain injury.

Covers NOT included
Tours Travel Insurance
If you are taking a team abroad on tour, your Permission to Tour requires the club to arrange appropriate travel insurance and this should include cover for emergency medical expenses resulting from of a rugby related injury. Most high street travel insurance policies exclude this cover, so Howden have arranged a bespoke scheme that includes cover for when playing competitive rugby.

Loss of Income
The Personal Accident policy does not include cover for loss of income resulting from temporary injuries, like broken bones. Clubs can arrange this cover separately for their teams or players, coaches can arrange this individually . Property Insurance
It is vital that you arrange protection for the clubs assets, including the clubhouse and your equipment, as well as protecting your income. As all clubs’ needs are different, this is something that should be arranged individually by each club. You can find details on the club property page of the insurance centre website.
